Kerala Style Sambar without Coconut Recipe

Only few days are there for Vishu and many of you are getting ready for preparing kerala sadhya, so I thought to post recipes of some dishes which I prepared till now.Hope it will be useful for some people who are beginners in preparing kerala sadhya. First thought to start from sambar. Here I am posting the recipe of sambar without coconut.I have tried many versions of sambar but only this version came out good for me.This is my own version of sambar which I learned from my practice.It is very easy to prepare,you can also follow this recipe and let me know how it turned out for you. I will update my blog with more recipes related to kerala sadhya in the following days.First we can see the easy method for preparing kerala sambar

Cooking Time:30 minutes
Servings:4 people

Ingredients


Toor dal-1 cup
Turmeric Powder-1/2 tsp
Fennel Powder-1/4 tsp
Asafoetida/Kayam-1/2 tsp
Potato-1 large,cut into cubes
Carrot-1,cut into medium size pieces
Pumpkin/Mathanga-1/2 cup,cut into medium size pieces
Winter melon/Kumbalanga-1/2 cup,cut into medium size pieces
Raddish-1//2 cup,cut into small rounds
 Drumstick-1 cut lengthwise
 Ladies finger-5-6 nos
 Tomato -1 medium,chopped
Tamarind-Lemon size
Redchili Powder-1/2 tsp
 Coriander Powder-1 tsp
Sambar Powder-2-3 tbs
Small Onions-Handful,Sliced finely
 Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
Curry leaves- few
Salt to taste
Oil

Method Of Preparation

  • Soak tamarind in 1/2 cup of warm water for sometime,squeeze and take the extract from it and keep it aside
  • Cook toor dal and all the vegetables except Ladies finger,Drumstick and tomato (which requires less cooking time)by adding turmeric powder,fennugreek powder,Asafoetida/Kayam, salt and water in a pot
  • Once the toor dal is cooked well and all the vegetable are half cooked add tamarind extract in it,then add the remaining vegetables like tomato,drumstick and ladies finger  in it and cook for 15 minutes
  • Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds in it,once it starts to splutter add sliced small onions in it and saute till onions turns golden brown in color then add coriander powder,sambar powder ,redchili powder and curry leaves in it and saute well for few minutes
  • Then pour it over the cooked vegetables in the pot and mix well and add some water in it and cook for few minutes
  • Tasty sambar is ready to serve hot with rice
