Vattayappam Recipe | Steamed Rice Cake Recipe

As I am giving more importance for healthy recipes I usually prepares this Vattayappam / Steamed Rice Cake as evening tea time snack, because it is oil free and cooked in steam. Steamed foods are good for our health. If you are looking for a healthy tea time snack for your kids.then you can definitely try this vattayappam/steamed rice cake recipe. I usually prepares this in evening with the left over appam batter of morning breakfast by adding little more sugar in that batter. My appam batter recipe is already posted in this blog. I will post it again here. It is different from other appam batter as I used Poha/Rice flakes instead of coconut. My appam batter preparation is easier than usual preparation of appam batter with coconut and coconut milk. You just need soaked raw rice,poha and yeast for this appam batter preparation. Today we can learn how to prepare Vattayappam / Steamed Rice Cake. Try this recipe for evening tea time snack as it is very soft, healthy and filling for your kid. Let me know your comments



Ingredients

Raw Rice-1 cup
Rice flakes- 1 cup
Yeast-1/2 tsp
Sugar-4 tsp
Salt to taste


Method Of Preparation

  • Wash and Soak the rice for 5 to 6 hours.
  • Wash and Soak the rice flakes for 3 to 4 hours
  • Drain the water then grind rice and rice flakes separately in a mixer till smooth
  • Add a little lukewarm water in yeast and mix well
  • Add this to the grounded  rice mixture
  • Add sugar and salt in to this mixture and mix well
  • The batter should be of thinner consistency than idly batter
  • keep it aside for 10 to 12 hours or overnight for the batter to ferment and rise
  • Grease the sides and middle of the cake pan with few drops of oil
  • Pour the batter in the cake pan and put some nuts and raisins on the top as shown in the below picture

  • Place it into the steamer and steam for 15-20 minutes
  • If you are using pressure cooker for steaming you just need to pour some water in the pressure cooker and place the cake pan in it and remove the weight of the preesure cooker and close the lid and cook for 15-20 minute
  • Insert a toothpick into the center if it came out clean,then the Vattayappam / Steamed Rice Cake is ready
  • Just keep the pan in cold water for few minutes for cooling it then  invert the pan 
  • Soft Vattayappam / Steamed Rice Cake is ready to serve
