Today I would like to share the recipe of Netholi Peera Pattichathu / Anchovies in Crushed Coconut Mixture. Anchovies which is also known as Netholi / Kozhuva / Chooda / Podi meen is a small fish which is a source of protein and it is popular in kerala. It contain lots of nutrients and vitamins. Omega-3 fatty acids found in large quanties in anchovies, so it helps to keep healthy heart by lowering the bad cholestrol level. Anchovies are low in mercury or any other toxins so safe during pregnancy as well. The bones of these tiny fish are so soft that we can eat them whole, thus making sure we are getting all the nutrients and vitamins in a single meal. Cooking fish this way is a healthy alternative to frying. This is one of my favorite anchovy / netholi recipe. Netholi Peera Pattichathu / Anchovies in Crushed Coconut Mixture is a tasty dish . Ingredients

Anchovies / Netholi- 250 gm
Grated Coconut- 1/2 cup
Shallots- 4-5 nos
Green chilies- 4-5 nos
Ginger- 1 inch, finely chopped
Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
Red chili powder-1/2 tsp
Coriander powder- 1/2 tsp
Kudam puli- 3 pieces
Curry leaves- 1-2 springs
Salt to taste
Coconut oil-1 tbs


Method Of Preparation

  • First cut the head of the fish, then wash and clean the fish thoroughly
  • Soak the kudam puli in little water
  • Grind grated coconut,shallots,green chilies,ginger, turmeric powder,red chili powder and coriander in a small jar of mixer for just 2-3 pulses by just adding 1 tbs of water,but make sure that every thing is mixed together
  • Then mix fish with crushed coconut mixture, salt and 1-2 springs curry leaves with your hands and then add soaked kudampuli and 1/2 cup of water and keep it in a medium flame till the it starts to boil. Then reduce the flame and cook covered for about 10-12 minutes. Then cook uncovered till almost all water is evaporated or till the fish is nicely cooked. Stirring occasionally to make sure the fish doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan (be careful not to crush the fish while stirring) .
  • Finally add 1 tbs coconut oil. Mix well and switch off the flame 
  • Tasty Netholi Peera Pattichathu / Anchovies in Crushed Coconut Mixture is ready to serve hot as a side dish with rice
