Fish Dum Biryani

Here I am sharing the recipe of a Yummy Fish Dum Biriyani, which you can prepare easily within few minutes for special occasions. Great for seafood lovers. Here I am explained how to prepare Fish Dum Biriyani with step by step instructions. You can check my video which I included at the end of this post, for step by step instructions. I used King fish for preparing this fish dum biriyani. You can use any type of fish of your choice. Try this recipe and let me know how it turned out for you


For Fish Marination

King Fish-750 gm

Turmeric powder-1 tsp

Redchili powder-1 tbs

Pepper powder-1 tsp

Garam masala powder-1 tsp

Ginger Garlic paste-1 tsp

Salt and a little water

Oil for frying

For Fish Masala



Ginger Garlic paste-1 tbs

Turmeric powder-1 tbs

Coriander powder-2 tbs

Redchili powder-2 tbs

Garam masala powder-1 tsp

Yogurt/Curd-2 tbs

Salt to taste

Oil-1 tbs

Curry leaves-1 spring

Coriander leaves-1 spring

Mint leaves-1 spring

For Cooking Rice

Basmati Rice-2 cup


Cinnamon stick- 1 inch piece


Ghee- 1 tsp


Water for Cooking Rice

For Garnishing

Fried Onion-1/4 cup

Fried Cashewnuts-2 tbs

Fried Raisins-2 tbs

Grind 6 cashwnuts by adding 1/2 cup coconut milk

Coriander leaves-2 spring

Mint leaves-2 spring

Ghee-1 tsp

Method Of Preparation

Fish Masala

  • Marinate the fish pieces with the paste of turmeric powder, redchili powder, pepper powder, garam masala powder, ginger garlic paste, salt and a little water and keep it aside for 1 hour
  • Heat oil in a pan and shallow fry the fish pieces till its half cooked
  • Once it is cooked on both sides,Remove them to a plate.
  • Drain the exceess oil in a tissue paper and keep it aside
  • Add sliced onion and salt into the same oil and saute it for few minutes
  • Add Ginger Garlic Paste and saute it well
  • Add Turmeric powder,Garam masala powder,Coriander powder and redchili powder into it and saute it well for few minutes
  • Add chopped tomatoes and salt into it and mixwell..cook it for few minutes 
  • Add curd into it and mix well
  • Add fried fish pieces into it and coat it well with the gravy
  • Garnish it with curry leaves,coriander leaves and mint leaves and keep it aside
Cooking Rice
  • Boil the water with whole spices like cloves,cardamon and cinnamon
  • Add ghee into the boiling water
  • Once the water starts to boil add the washed rice and salt into it
  • Mix everything well and check the salt in the water, if needed add more salt
  • Once the rice is half cooked,drain them and keep it aside
Dum Process
  • Grease the bottom of the pot with ghee
  • Spread a layer of fish gravy/masala on bottom of the pot
  • Spread a layer of rice on top
  • Sprinkle some coriander leaves,mint leaves,fried onions,fried cashewnuts and fried raisins on top 
  • Add few drops of coconut milk on top
  • Add ghee on top
  • Spread a layer of rice on top
  • Spread a layer of fish gravy/masala on top
  • Spread a layer of rice on top
  • Sprinkle some fried onions,fried cashewnuts and fried raisins on top
  • Add ghee and few drops of coconut milk on top
  • Sprinkle some coriander leaves and mint leaves on top
  • Finally sprinkle some garam masala on top
  • Tightly Cover the pot with aluminium foil and palce a heavy lid on top
  • Heat on medium flame for 5 minutes and reduce to very low flame for 10 minutes
  • Switch off the flame and let it sit for few minutes before serving
  • Tasty Fish Biriyani is now ready to serve hot
