Kuzhi Paniyaram With Tomato Onion Chutney Recipe

You can prepare it easily if you have idli / dosa batter and paniyaram pan / unniappam pan with you. You can make this paniyaram with sour idli batter. At my home, whenever I make idli / dosa batter, the first day of fermentation, I make idlis. Next day dosa and third day the batter would become sour, and it is perfect for making Kuzhi Paniyaram. You can serve it with any type of chutney but I will always prefer to make Tomato onion chutney. Tomato onion chutney is a prefect combination with this kuzhi paniyarm. Ingredients


Idli Batter – 2 cup
Mustard seeds -1 tsp
Urad dal -1/2 tsp
Onion – 1
Green chilli -1 finely chopped
Curry leaves – few
Coriander leaves – few finely chopped
Asafoetida-1/4 tsp
Salt to taste
Oil-3tsp


Method Of Preparation

  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add urad dal.
  • When dal turns golden brown, add asafoetida
  • Add finely chopped onions,green chilli and curry leaves.
  • Saute until onions becomes soft, add needed salt and coriander leaves. Let it cool a little
  • Now add this mixture into the Idli batter and mix well. Now the batter is ready for preparing paniyaram
  • Heat a paniyaram/unniappam pan.
  • Add 3 tsp of oil in each mould and heat it
  • Pour a spoonful batter in each mould up to 3/4 full
  • Cover the pan and cook it for few minutes
  • Once the edges turn golden brown, flip over the paniyaram to the other side using a stainless steel spoon.
  • Cook the other side also until it turns golden brown.
  • Remove from pan using a spoon and serve hot with tomato onion chutney

    Tomato Onion Chutney



    Ingredients

    Tomatoes -3
    Onions -2
    Red chillies – 4
    Asafoetida-1/4 tsp
    Tamarind-a small piece
    Salt to taste
    Oil – 1 tbsp

    For the seasoning

    Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
    Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
    Curry leaves-few

    Method Of Preparation

    • Chop onions and tomatoes into small pieces
    • Heat oil in a pan, saute red chillies for a few seconds
    • Add onions and saute until onions turn transparent.
    • Then add tomatoes, asafoetida and salt. Saute it well until the tomatoes becomes soft and slighty mushy
    • Allow the mixture to cool
    • Once it cools, grind this mixture in a grinder along with tamarind and salt
    • Grind it into a smooth paste
    • Pour the chutney into a serving bowl. Now you can do the tempering
    • Heat oil in a pan, Add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add urad dal and curry leaves. Saute it well until the urad dal turns golden brown in color.
    • Pour this mixture over the chutney
    • Now the yummy tomato onion chutney is ready to serve hot with kuzhi paniyaram
