Spicy Fish Curry | Meen Mulakittathu is an easy fish curry recipe that anybody can prepare within few minutes with very few ingredients that are always available in your kitchen. U can see the ingredients that I am using in each fish curry recipe in this blog is different. This spicy fish curry/meen mulakittathu recipe is similar to that of the Kottayamstylefishcurry recipe that I already posted in this blog. In kottayamstylefishcurry the main ingredient used for sour taste is kudampuli/kokum, but in this curry I am using tamarind and tomato for getting sour taste for this curry. I used saradine/mathi for making this curry.Saradine/mathi has many health benefits. I would like to share with you some health benefits of sardine in this post. Saradines are an excellent source of vitamin B-12, calcium, minerals and protein. Ingredients

Saradine/Mathi-500gm
Oil-1 tbs
Mustard seeds-1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds-1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds-1 tsp
Ginger-1tbs(chopped)
Curryleaves-few
Small onions-8 to10 (chopped)
Tomatoes-2 (chopped)
Turmeric powder-1/2 tsp(for marinating fish)+1/2 tsp(for gravy)
Redchilli powder-1 tsp
Pepper powder-1 tsp
Salt to taste
Curry leaves
Coconut oil-2 tbs


Method Of Preparation
  • Marinate the fish pieces with turmeric powder and salt for 10. minutes
  • Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds and cumin seeds into it. Saute it for a minute
  • Then add ginger, curry leaves and small onions into it. Saute it until onion turns golden brown in color
  • Add tomatoes into it and saute it until tomatoes are cooked well
  • Once tomatoes are cooked well add turmeric powder, chili powder and pepper powder into it. Saute it until raw smell of powders goes. Add salt into it and mix everything well
  • Add marinated fish pieces into it. Mix fish pieces with the masala. Pour water as needed. Add tamarind pulp into it. Mix it well
  • Cover it with a lid and allow the fish to cook well
  • Once fish pieces are cooked well add few curryleaves and coconut oil into it
  • Delicious spicy fish curry/meen mulakittathu is now ready to serve hot with rice
