Olan Recipe | Olan Curry With Ashgourd&Cowpeas Recipe with Video Recipe. Olan is the one of the main items of kerala sadhya. It willl be served as a side dish in kerala sadhya. We can prepare this very easily with very less ingredients. It is made with Ash gourd/Elavan/kumbalanga and cowpeas. U can prepare this curry without cowpeas also. Main flavor of this curry comes from the coconut milk and the coconut oil used in this curry. This is a less spicy dish. Try this recipe and let me know how it turned out for you


Ash gourd/Elavan/Kumbalanga-1 cup(cut into medium cubes)
Red cowpeas/Van payar-1/2 cup
Green chilies-3to4(Cut into slits)
Thin Coconut milk-1 cup
Thick Coconut milk-1/2 cup
Curry leaves-a spring
Salt to taste
Coconut Oil-2 tbs

Method Of Preparation
  • Soak the red cowpeas in water for 3 hours. Drain the water. Cook it well by adding salt and 1 cup water in it. Keep it aside
  • Cook the Ash gourd by adding salt and 1 cup water in it.
  • Once ash gourd is cooked well add the cooked cowpeas in it
  • Then add green chillies and thin coconut milk in it. 
  • Let it boil for few minutes
  • Then switch off the flame and add thick coconut milk. Mix it well
  • Season it with coconut oil and a spring of curry leaves
  • Olan is now ready to serve with rice
